It is important to have an eye exam every two years, or every year if you are over age 65, even if you aren’t experiencing problems with your vision.
Eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, etc can be detected by optometrists before symptoms start. The earlier these conditions are detected, the better they can be managed and treated, which can reduce the risk of permanent vision loss.
Eye exams can also reveal conditions that have nothing to do with the eyes. Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and some types of cancer are also detectable in eye exams. It is especially important to have regular eye exams if you have been diagnosed with these conditions.
An estimated one in four people with diabetes develop diabetic retinopathy, which often does not have any symptoms in the early stages. If left undetected, this condition can progress to diabetic macular edema, a common and preventable cause of vision loss.
At our clinic, we offer retinal photos, which can help detect these and other eye conditions. This service is covered by Alberta Health if deemed necessary by your optometrist.
It is equally important for children to have regular eye exams. Vision problems in children can cause behavioral and educational problems. Kids often won’t complain if they can’t see because it is all they know. They don’t realize there is something wrong. Vision problems can be treated more easily if they are detected early. Make sure you are taking your children for eye exams every year. Alberta Health covers annual eye exams for children age 18 and under.
We carry a variety of children’s frames, including a selection of Disney, Adidas, and Superflex frames.
If you are interested in contact lenses for your child or yourself, ask your optomestrist. He or she will determine if the contact lenses you select are a good fit for your eyes with a contact lens fitting. They will also teach you how to use and care for your contacts.
